Laser marking for jewelry, watches, and precious metals
Jewelry production runs on detail. Serial numbers inside ring shanks, designer signatures on the back of pendants, hallmark stamps on bullion, anti-counterfeiting marks on watch components, decorative engraving on cufflinks and money clips, color-marked branding on titanium and stainless steel watch parts, all of it lives or dies on mark resolution, depth control, and the ability to mark precious metal without damaging the surface around the mark.
A MOPA fiber laser is the right tool for almost all of this work. The independently adjustable pulse frequency (1 to 4000 kHz) and pulse width (2 to 500 ns) give you the resolution to produce 0.1 mm character heights on gold and the control to color-mark titanium and stainless without burning through. Why MOPA, not Q-switched, for jewelry
Q-switched fiber lasers have a fixed pulse width, usually around 100 to 200 nanoseconds. That works for raw ablation on industrial steel, but for jewelry it has two limitations.
The first is detail. At fixed pulse width, the smallest reliable mark size is bounded by the pulse energy delivered per spot. MOPA pushes the pulse down to 2 nanoseconds, which lets you get cleaner edges on character heights below 0.3 mm and tighter line widths on photo engravings of family portraits or designer logos.
The second is color. To color-mark titanium and stainless, the laser has to heat the surface enough to form a precisely controlled oxide layer (the color is interference, not pigment). The thickness of that oxide layer determines whether the mark looks blue, gold, purple, or green. You cannot control oxide thickness reliably with a fixed-pulse Q-switched laser. MOPA’s adjustable pulse width and frequency give you that control. This is why every jeweler who does titanium color rings or color-marked watch components uses MOPA.
Lens and rotary choice for jewelry work
Every JPT Laser Shop fiber galvo machine includes two lenses and one rotary of the buyer’s choice in the base price. For jewelry work specifically:
- Lens 1: 70 mm, fine detail on rings, small pendants, watch components. Working area approximately 50 × 50 mm. This is the sharpest tip of the catalog.
- Lens 2: 110 mm, medium parts (bracelets, larger pendants, watch backs). Working area approximately 80 × 80 mm.
- Rotary: D60, 3-jaw chuck up to about 60 mm diameter. Holds ring shanks, watch crowns, small bullion rounds, decorative knurled parts. The single most common rotary specification for jewelry production.
If your shop also marks tumblers, larger trophy pieces, or production hardware alongside jewelry, the D80 or D100 rotary is the right second choice. You can swap rotaries; you cannot buy spare lenses cheaply later. Pick the right lens combination up front.

For most jewelers starting out or scaling from hand-engraving, the 30W MOPA at $3,600 is the sweet spot. It covers every jewelry application short of production color marking on watch components at scale. Solo artisans who don’t need to color-mark and don’t engrave deeper than 0.3 mm can start with the 20W; production shops with branded watch lines should move directly to the 100W M7.

Frequently asked questions
What kind of machine do I need to engrave jewelry?
A fiber laser. A laser engraving machine for jewelry is a MOPA fiber laser that marks gold, silver, platinum, stainless and titanium. A 20W to 30W metal engraving machine handles inside-ring engraving, hallmarks and fine detail; see our recommended machines above.
Can these machines mark 24K gold?
Yes. Pure gold and high-karat alloys mark cleanly with MOPA fiber. The reflectivity of soft gold can be a challenge for some Q-switched lasers, but MOPA pulse control lets you adjust energy delivery to overcome it.
What’s the minimum character height I can engrave?
With the 70 mm lens, character heights down to roughly 0.1 mm are readable on polished surfaces. For inside-the-ring serial numbers, 0.3 to 0.5 mm is the common spec. For brand marks visible to the customer, 1 to 3 mm is typical.
Will this machine engrave inside a ring shank?
Yes, with the included D60 rotary. The ring mounts in the chuck and rotates while the laser writes. For wedding bands and engagement rings this is the standard production setup.
Can I color-mark on white gold or platinum?
No. Color marking via MOPA depends on forming a controlled oxide layer; platinum and white gold do not form colored oxides the way titanium and stainless do. For color work on jewelry, your materials are titanium, stainless steel watch components, and anodized aluminum.
Is software included or do I need to buy LightBurn?
EZCad 2 and EZCad 3 are included on the USB key and have everything you need for production jewelry marking. LightBurn is supported via an adapter if you prefer that workflow; the LightBurn license is around $80 from LightBurn directly.
How much space does the machine need?
A typical jewelry shop setup needs around 1 m² of bench space for the machine and the controller, plus space for the rotary when in use. The machines are stationary, not handheld.
