Laser Rust Removal: How It Works and Which Machine to Choose
Industrial cleaning with JPT CL series pulse fiber. No chemicals, no abrasives, no damage to the base metal, selective rust ablation that leaves the substrate untouched.
The physics in one sentence: rust has a much lower ablation threshold than steel, so a pulsed 1064 nm beam tuned to vaporize oxide leaves the base metal untouched. This is why laser cleaning is selective in a way no abrasive or chemical method can match.

What laser rust removal is
Laser rust removal is a non-contact cleaning process that uses a pulsed fiber laser to vaporize rust, oxides, paint, and surface contaminants while leaving the underlying base metal intact. The beam delivers enough energy to break the bond between the contaminant layer and the substrate, but stays below the ablation threshold of the base material. The result is a clean, ready-to-weld or ready-to-coat surface with no chemical waste, no abrasive media to dispose of, and no mechanical wear on the part.
JPT Laser Shop builds laser cleaning machines around the JPT CL series pulsed fiber sources, the same family JPT uses for industrial rust removal lines worldwide. Our current Cleaning catalog runs from 200W up through 500W, with a 2000W tier available on request for heavy-production work. Every machine ships DDP to US, Canada, and EU buyers, with customs and duties included in the listed price.
How laser cleaning works
Rust (iron oxide) has a much lower laser ablation threshold than steel. When a pulsed 1064 nm beam strikes a rusted surface, the energy is absorbed by the oxide layer first. With the right combination of peak power, pulse duration, and repetition rate, the oxide vaporizes off the surface before the base metal absorbs enough energy to be damaged. The result is selective removal: the rust goes, the steel stays.
The same principle applies to old paint, anodized coatings, weld scale, mold release, oil residue, and most non-metallic contaminants. JPT CL sources adjust pulse parameters across a wide range, so the same machine can switch between heavy rust removal and gentle pre-weld surface preparation by changing software settings, not the hardware.

For most shops doing pre-weld surface prep, weld scale removal, or moderate rust on automotive and structural parts, the 200W or 300W air-cooled tier is the right starting point. For production lines, paint stripping at scale, or sustained 8-hour duty cycles, the 500W water-cooled tier is the better long-term investment.
Industrial applications
Pre-weld surface preparation
Strip rust, mill scale, and oil before welding for cleaner weld pools and better joint strength. Replaces hand grinding and chemical degreasing.
Automotive restoration
Selective rust removal on body panels, chassis components, and engine parts without removing surrounding paint or damaging the underlying steel.
Mold and die cleaning
Remove built-up release agent, polymer residue, and rust from injection molds and casting dies without disassembly or solvent baths.
Pipeline and coating removal
Strip old paint, epoxy, and corrosion protection coatings on pipes, tanks, and structural elements without abrasive blasting or chemical strippers.
Heritage and historic restoration
Gentle layer-by-layer removal of corrosion and surface deposits on monuments, machinery, and architectural metal without altering the base material.

Frequently asked questions
How much surface area can I clean per minute?
It depends on the contaminant, layer thickness, and the machine’s power. As a rough starting point, the 200W machine handles around 0.5 to 1.5 m² per hour on light rust, the 300W handles 1 to 3 m² per hour, and the 500W can push 3 to 6 m² per hour on production-quality parameters. Heavy paint or thick rust slows everything down. Send a sample part for accurate scoping.
Will the laser damage the base metal?
No, when the machine is operated at the correct parameters for the substrate. Iron oxide ablates at a much lower energy threshold than carbon steel; the same goes for paint vs aluminum, weld scale vs stainless. Selective removal is the whole point of pulsed laser cleaning.
Does laser cleaning produce hazardous fumes?
The vaporized material has to go somewhere. For lead paint, heavy metal coatings, or unknown contaminants, you need fume extraction with appropriate filtration. For pure rust on plain steel, the byproducts are minimal but ventilation is still recommended. We include a port for fume extraction connection on all machines.
What’s the difference between air-cooled and water-cooled?
Air-cooled models (200W, 300W) are simpler, more portable, and have lower up-front cost. They are sized for shop-floor cleaning, automotive restoration, mold maintenance, and similar duty cycles. Water-cooled models (500W and up) sustain longer duty cycles and higher power, making them appropriate for production lines and heavy paint stripping where the machine runs hours per day.
Can these machines also do welding or cutting?
The CL series is optimized for cleaning. For shops that need cleaning plus welding plus cutting from a single machine, our upcoming 3-in-1 / 4-in-1 fiber laser welder (announced; release date pending) covers all three workflows. Email us to be notified when it lists.
What’s the warranty?
Three years on the JPT CL source and the machine, consistent with our warranty matrix for JPT-sourced fiber lasers. Defects-only return policy with 30-day inspection window, return shipping at our cost via the original crate.
