Bare stainless vs powder-coated: two tumblers, two lasers

The single most important thing to get right before buying a machine: match the laser to the tumbler surface. They are not the same job.

Bare or raw stainless tumblers, use a MOPA fiber laser. MOPA pulse modulation forms controlled oxide layers in the steel that read as specific colors (reds, blues, golds, copper hues). The color is interference-based and dishwasher-safe because it is the metal itself, not a coating. Q-switched fiber cannot do this. This color marking is what drives premium pricing on bare-metal tumblers, and it is exactly what our fiber machines do.

Powder-coated and painted tumblers (matte black, colored exteriors), use a CO2 galvo laser. This is the honest answer, and it is the bigger Etsy market. A CO2 galvo at 10,600 nm is absorbed by the coating but reflected by the stainless underneath, so it lifts the coating cleanly and leaves the bright steel untouched, giving the crisp two-tone (white-on-color) reveal customers want. A 60W CO2 galvo is the machine to reach for here: a full wrap takes under two minutes and a simple single-side design just a few seconds. A fiber laser will remove the coating too, but it then keeps cutting into the steel and leaves a rougher gray mark instead of the clean reveal, so for coated tumblers CO2 galvo is the right tool.

The trade-off: a CO2 galvo cannot mark bare metal at all (the steel reflects 10,600 nm). So if your work is mostly coated tumblers, a 60W CO2 galvo is your machine; if it is bare stainless and color, a MOPA fiber is. Shops that do both often run one of each.

Will the engraving survive the dishwasher?
