How laser marking anodized aluminum works

Anodized aluminum has a hard, porous oxide layer that has been dyed (usually black, but any color). A fiber laser removes or bleaches the dye in that layer, revealing the lighter oxide underneath as a permanent, smooth mark, without cutting through to raw aluminum. With MOPA pulse control you can also drive the mark the other way for black or high-contrast results on lighter finishes. Because the mark lives inside the existing oxide, the surface stays sealed and smooth.
