Flat laser engraving relies on the focal plane staying constant across the workpiece. A pen barrel violates that condition immediately: the surface curves away from the lens in every direction once you move past the centerline. Without a rotary, only a narrow strip at the very top of the barrel sits in true focus. Marks on the sides go soft, logos appear stretched or pinched toward the edges, and anything more than a few millimeters wide shows visible keystoning distortion.

The rotary solves this by rotating the pen around its own axis while the galvo mirrors scan along a single focused line. Each incremental rotation presents a fresh strip of barrel surface at the correct focal distance. The 70 mm lens delivers the smallest focused spot in the lineup. The trade-off is a smaller working area, roughly 50 x 50 mm, but that is generous relative to any pen barrel diameter, so you are not sacrificing usable area. The 110 mm lens widens the working area to roughly 80 x 80 mm and raises the working distance, making it easier to clear the rotary body and pen clip hardware. Fine detail is still clean; the spot is slightly larger than the 70 mm but still well suited for logos and names at pen-barrel scale. Metal pens arrive in a wider range of finishes than most cylindrical stock, and the MOPA source is what makes one machine handle all of them without swapping strategies mid-run.

Bare Aluminum and Aluminum Alloy Barrels

Aluminum engraves to a clean matte-grey or near-white mark depending on pulse settings. With MOPA pulse-width control, you can produce a bright frosted mark on a brushed or polished barrel. Anodized aluminum is where MOPA color marking becomes commercially relevant: the laser bleaches the anodized layer to produce marks that range from light beige to near-black depending on parameters, and with multi-pass color filling you can produce gold, brown, or rusty-red tones in the mark itself. Brass Barrels

Bare brass responds well to fiber laser marking. The mark is typically a dark oxidized contrast against the warm gold of the substrate. Lacquered or painted brass, common in mid-range and premium pens, marks by removing the coating to expose the metal beneath, producing a bright metallic reveal. MOPA pulse-width tuning controls whether the edge of the cleared area is clean or feathered, which matters when the logo has sharp corners or fine strokes.

Stainless Steel Barrels

Stainless is where the MOPA source earns its premium most visibly. Fiber lasers at shorter pulse widths (available only on MOPA, not Q-switched sources) produce the surface oxide chemistry that results in color marks, blue, gold, purple, and other tones, without removing material. For a premium gift pen destined for a C-suite recipient, a full-color logo in the recipient’s brand colors on a stainless barrel is not achievable on a standard Q-switched fiber source. Chrome-Plated and Coated Barrels

Chrome plating on steel or brass responds to fiber laser marking, typically producing a dark mark by micro-textural change or a thin oxide layer on the chrome surface. Results vary by plating thickness; test runs are recommended before committing a large promotional order. Painted metal barrels can be marked by ablating the coating, similar to lacquered brass.

Materials Outside This Catalog

Raw wood pen barrels, fully plastic barrels, and clear or transparent barrels are not fiber jobs. Wood and uncoated plastic require a CO2 source to absorb the 1064 nm wavelength. Clear and transparent materials transmit rather than absorb the beam and do not mark on a fiber machine regardless of settings. If your pen lineup includes wood or acrylic options, those need a separate machine or an outside vendor.

Corporate and Promotional Volume Workflow

The most common commercial pen engraving job is a corporate order: one consistent logo, a varying name or employee number, and a production run that might be dozens or hundreds of pieces. The rotary fixture and EZCad software make this workflow straightforward.

Fixturing for Round Stock

The rotary chuck grips the pen by one end. For pens with a removable cap, removing the cap before loading gives a clean grip and keeps the chuck jaws away from the engraving zone. Pens without removable caps can be loaded cap-end in, depending on where the engraving zone falls. A consistent loading reference, a shoulder stop or a marked depth line on the rotary body, is the key to repeatable registration across a batch. Once the first pen is focused and the artwork is positioned, every subsequent pen loads to the same reference and runs without re-focusing, provided the barrel diameters are consistent within the batch.

Variable data, names, numbers, serial codes, is handled in EZCad2 or EZCad3 via a text list or CSV import. The operator loads the file before the run, and the software advances the active text field automatically after each marking cycle triggered by the foot pedal. This means the operator’s motion is simply: load pen, foot pedal, remove pen, load next pen. Per-pen cycle time is short; the bottleneck in a large run is the load and unload motion, not the laser.

One Logo, Many Names

A typical corporate setup has the company logo locked as a static element at one position on the barrel and the recipient name as the variable element directly below or adjacent to it. Both elements are in the same EZCad job file. The logo does not change; the name field pulls from the list. This is a standard two-element job and does not require any re-setup between pieces once the first proof is approved.

Full-Wrap Artwork

For premium or branded pens where the design wraps the entire barrel circumference, EZCad’s rotary settings allow the galvo to step-and-scan in increments synchronized with the rotary drive, covering the full 360 degrees in one continuous job. Registration between passes is handled by the software; the operator does not need to manually rotate the pen between partial marks.
