Lens Selection for Phone Cases and Tech Accessories
Every galvo system we ship includes two lenses of your choice from the 70, 110, 175, 210, and 300 mm range. For phone cases and most tech accessories, the 110 mm and 175 mm lenses are the practical workhorses.
The 110 mm lens gives a working area of roughly 80 by 80 mm with high spot density. That means sharper resolution on fine logos, thin script fonts, and detailed artwork. A phone case fits comfortably inside that field. The 175 mm lens opens the working area to roughly 130 by 130 mm, which is useful when you want to lay multiple card cases or AirTag holders side by side and mark a small batch in a single run without repositioning.
Under 80W the lens element is K9 optical glass, which is the appropriate grade for this power range and gives clean transmission without the cost overhead of fused silica. You are not under-specced at 20W or 30W with K9; that pairing is intentional.
The motorized Z axis that ships with every system lets you set and return to focus precisely. When you fixture a new product type, you dial in focus once, save the Z position, and recall it. That repeatability matters when you are switching between a thin card case and a thicker phone case in the same session.
Fixturing Thin and Slightly Curved Cases
Phone cases present a fixturing challenge that flat keychains do not. A phone case is nominally flat but often has a slight curve, raised edges, a camera cutout, and a lip designed to grip a phone rather than sit still on a flat surface. If the case rocks or shifts during marking, you get a smeared edge on the artwork.
The practical solution for most metal phone cases is a simple recessed jig. Cut or mill a pocket in a piece of aluminum or MDF that matches the outer profile of the case. The case drops in, the walls of the pocket register it in X and Y, and the bottom of the pocket supports it evenly. If the case still rocks because of a slight curve, add a thin layer of closed-cell foam on the pocket floor. The foam conforms to the curve and eliminates movement without raising the case out of focus.
Mask the camera cutout and any ports with transfer tape before marking if the job places artwork close to those openings. Ablated material is minimal on anodized aluminum but the habit of masking cutouts prevents any debris from entering the case interior.
For card cases and AirTag holders, which are thicker and stiffer, a simple step jig or even double-sided tape on a flat base plate is enough. The goal is the same: no movement during the mark, consistent Z height, and easy removal without scratching the finish.
