3D Laser Marking and Engraving Explained

Short answer: “3D marking” means marking that follows depth, not just a flat plane. There are three levels: (1) the motorized Z axis included on every JPT galvo, which sets focus on parts of different heights; (2) an optional EZCad 3 upgrade that varies focus during the job for ramped and relief work; and (3) a true 3D dynamic-focus head for marking curved and contoured surfaces. Most shops only ever need the first two.
The three levels of 3D marking
1. Motorized Z (included). Every JPT galvo machine ships with a motorized Z axis, which many competitors charge extra for. It sets the focal height precisely, so you can mark parts of different thicknesses and step focus between heights. For flat parts at one focus height, this is all you need.
2. 2.5D dynamic focus (optional upgrade, USD 750). An EZCad 3 software and head upgrade lets the machine vary focus during the job. That unlocks ramped engraving, relief depth on otherwise flat stock, and multi-pass deep engraving.
3. True 3D head (optional upgrade). A Feeltek FR10-F dynamic-focus head (an optional upgrade, around USD 5,500) maps a curved surface so the laser stays in focus across spheres, cones, and contoured parts, true 3D marking. The FR10-F comes in 100 x 100 and 200 x 200 mm field sizes and steers focus in software (LenMark), so it uses no swappable field lens — the focus is moved electronically across the surface instead of by changing lenses.

- 2.5D: depth-varying engraving, relief logos, deep engraving on flat metal.
- True 3D: marking on curved cases, rings, tumblers, and contoured surfaces.
Which machine do you need?
