Short answer: For surface marking, barcodes and serial numbers, 20–30W is plenty — and 30W is the all-round sweet spot. Step up to 50–60W when you need deep engraving, faster cycle times, or annealing. 100W is for relief / 3D work and high-volume depth; 200W is for heavy material removal and thin-metal cutting. The key idea: more watts does not change what you can mark — almost any fiber laser marks the same metals — it changes how fast and how deep you can do it.

What more power actually buys you

This is the single most misunderstood spec in the category. A higher-wattage fiber laser does not unlock new materials. A 20W and a 100W will both mark stainless steel, brass, titanium and anodised aluminium. What the extra power buys is throughput and depth: more energy per second means you can engrave deeper in fewer passes, run faster cycle times in production, and remove more material. If your work is light surface marking, paying for 100W mostly buys speed you may not need. If your work is deep engraving, that same power pays for itself in time saved on every part.

20W — surface marking and codes

A 20W fiber laser is a marking tool. It is excellent for serial numbers, logos, 2D data-matrix codes, barcodes and light annealing on small parts. It can engrave, but slowly and over many passes, so it is not the right choice if depth is a regular part of your work. For a jewellery shop marking rings, a parts maker serialising components, or anyone doing mostly cosmetic marks, 20W is genuinely enough.

30W — the all-round sweet spot

30W is the wattage we point most buyers to when they are unsure. It keeps the fast, clean marking of a 20W but adds enough headroom to do occasional deeper engraving and to speed up production without jumping to a much higher price. If your mix is “mostly marking with some engraving,” 30W is the safe, versatile default.

50–60W — deep engraving and speed

This is the tier to choose when engraving depth or production speed becomes a real part of the job. 50–60W cuts engraving time dramatically versus 20–30W, handles deeper recesses for tooling and firearms, and gives you comfortable margins for high-contrast colour and annealing on a MOPA source. If deep engraving is more than about one job in ten, start here rather than at 30W.

100W — relief, 3D and high volume

At 100W you are buying serious material-removal speed: deep relief engraving, 3D work, and high-volume production where cycle time per part is money. Our 100W machines run on a genuine JPT M7 source (model YDFLP-100-M7-M-R) — the imported-component premium tier, not a budget variant. 200W — heavy removal and thin-metal cutting

200W is for the heaviest material removal, the fastest deep engraving, and thin-metal cutting. It is overkill for marking and most engraving, and it is the right tool when you are routinely removing a lot of metal or cutting thin sheet. Most shops never need this much power; the ones that do know it.

The honest part: when we talk you up, and down

If deep engraving, relief, or fast production is a real share of your work, we will tell you to go up — under-buying power means slow cycle times you cannot fix later without a new source. But if you are marking codes and logos, we will tell you a 20–30W machine is all you need, even though the bigger machine is a bigger sale. Buying power you will never use is just spent money. Tell us the actual job and we will point you to the smallest machine that does it comfortably.

Power is a separate decision from MOPA

Wattage and source type are two different choices. Power sets speed and depth; MOPA vs Q-switched sets whether you get colour marking, annealing and the finest pulse control. Every M7 and M8 machine we sell is MOPA, so you choose power for the work and get the control for free.

Does a higher-wattage fiber laser mark more materials?

No. A 20W and a 100W mark the same metals. Higher power gives you faster cycle times and deeper engraving in fewer passes — speed and depth, not new capability.

What wattage is best for a beginner or small business?

30W is the most versatile starting point: fast clean marking with enough headroom for occasional engraving. Choose 20W if you only mark codes and logos, or 50–60W if engraving depth is a regular part of the work.

Can a 20W fiber laser engrave deeply?
